The cover painting of A Turbulent Wake is by the artist John Brown

John Brown’ solo exhibitions are informed by visits to places such as Tuscany, Venice, Kerala, Zanzibar, Spain and in the painting he attempts to capture the sense of place rather than recreating a pictorial likeness.   He works mainly in acrylic on boards but builds up the surface with collage and found materials to create exciting surfaces.  The human figure, present in a large number of works, indicates scale and the comparative fragility of man and the landscape.  Colour is an important element in his work.   The often very intense colours are a direct response to travel rather than a reflection of the artist’s native land.

Recently, he has been working on a series of pieces based on recent visits to South Uist and a collaboration with the poet, Henry Marsh. A trip to the Mekong Delta, in Vietnam and Cambodia in 2008 provided an inspiration for a solo exhibition with The Scottish Gallery, Edinburgh in 2009.
